Fifth Grade

Fifth grade at Holy Spirit Catholic School is an exciting year of academic and spiritual growth. A challenging curriculum encourages deeper thinking, greater independence, and responsible learning habits. With faith at the center, students strengthen their relationship with Jesus while practicing respect, responsibility, and care for others.

Deepening Our Relationship with Jesus
A study of the seven sacraments helps students understand how God’s grace strengthens their lives. They deepen their knowledge of the Mass, liturgical seasons, and Church teachings while exploring the Rosary, parables, saints, and vocations. Mary’s example of discipleship encourages students to consider how they can respond to God’s call in their own lives.

Reading Thoughtfully and Writing Clearly
Through novel studies, fiction, and nonfiction, students explore story elements, discuss ideas, and strengthen comprehension. Vocabulary, spelling, and grammar instruction support clear communication, while writing gives students opportunities to organize their thoughts and express their ideas with detail.

Building Mathematical Understanding
Students expand their understanding of place value, multiplication, division, and fractions. Geometry and measurement provide opportunities to apply skills, solve problems, and explain their reasoning; building a strong foundation for 6th grade mathematics.

Exploring America’s Story
Social studies traces American history through the study of Native American peoples, exploration, colonization, and the American Revolution. Students learn about the Constitution and government while using geography to understand how places and events have shaped our nation.

Investigating the Natural World
Life, physical, and Earth science encourage students to ask questions, explore relationships, and develop scientific thinking. Students build a broader understanding of the natural world and how its systems work together.

Throughout fifth grade, students practice managing responsibilities, persevering through challenges, and taking pride in their work. These habits prepare them for sixth grade and continued success in faith and learning.
