Second Grade

Second grade at Holy Spirit Catholic School is a meaningful year of spiritual and academic growth. In partnership with parents, we help children build confidence, strengthen their skills, and develop their unique gifts. As students prepare for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, they deepen their relationship with Jesus and their understanding of God’s love.

Preparing for the Sacraments

Students discover the gifts of forgiveness and grace as they prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and learn about receiving Jesus in the Eucharist. In the spring, children receive the beautiful gift of First Holy Communion.  A joyful milestone in their faith journey. Through prayer, Bible stories, and the lives of the saints, children grow in their understanding of the Mass and learn ways to live their faith each day.

Growing as Readers and Writers
Students strengthen phonics, word recognition, and fluency while learning to ask questions, make predictions, sequence events, and summarize what they read. Writing instruction helps children move from sentences to organized paragraphs as they create stories, share opinions, and explain information. Careful listening and classroom conversations support thoughtful communication.

Developing Mathematical Confidence
Second graders explore numbers through 1,000 and deepen their understanding of place value, addition, and subtraction, including regrouping. Lessons in money, time, measurement, graphing, and geometry help students connect math to everyday life and build problem-solving skills.

Exploring Communities and Citizenship
Through social studies, students compare life in the past and present, practice map skills, and explore how communities work. They learn about citizenship, needs and wants, and the goods and services people provide for one another.

Thinking Like Scientists
Science encourages curiosity through observation, investigation, and hands-on learning. Students explore matter, engineering, Earth and space, and living things while practicing asking questions and solving problems.

Throughout this special year, students grow in independence, compassion, and responsibility, supported by a school community that values both their learning and their faith.
